Dense Beaked Whale – Mesoplodon densirostris
Strap-toothed Beaked Whale – M. layardii
The extraordinary beaked whales are amongst the least known mammals on the planet. Living in deep water in the open ocean much of what we know about beaked whales is from solitary stranded specimens. The strangest member of this group has to be the Strap-toothed Beaked Whale. Males of this species have two large tusk-like teeth that grow up and over its upper jaw making it impossible to open its mouth more than a couple of centimetres.
